The
Aldrich Broadcast
Aldrich has their own television station that broadcasts to each classroom.
All classes create and produce broadcasts about school and community
events that air weekly with additional special events that are featured. |

Olympic
Day
This year long program integrates multicultural education into reading,
writing, math, geography, science, music, art, and technology. Each
class represents an Olympic country. |

Simply
Thrilled About Reading - S.T.A.R.
This program is an important component of the Bess Streeter Aldrich
reading program. In addition to daily time set aside for in-class
reading, we also expect students to read outside of school. |

The
Junior United Nations
This is a group of third, fourth, and fifth graders who meet once
a month to plan events for our school such as skating parties, spirit
days, and community service projects. |

The
Walking Club
Students have the opportunity to walk one mile every morning. Each
mile is recorded and students collect a small toe tag for each mile
walked. After each 25 mile mark students receive a special tag and
join the walkers on the Honor Roll wall.
Those students who walk 25 miles or more during the year are rewarded
with a special picnic/walk at the end of the year. |

Golden
Sower Lunch Bunch
This lunch hour program allows students in fourth and fifth grade
to share in discussions and activities that center around a love of
reading and our state's children's choice literature award. |

CONTESTS
AND COMPETITIONS
Henry
Doorly Zoo Poster Contest
The Henry Doorly Zoo Poster Contest is held annually by the Zoo’s
Membership Department. Aldrich 3rd grade students participate. The
Zoo announces the theme for the contest each January. A winning classroom
poster is selected from each room. The winning classroom posters are
sent to the Zoo for evaluation. Those students whose posters are sent
forward are invited to the Zoo Poster Contest Party and Awards Ceremony
sponsored by the Zoo in April. Judges select a group of finalists
that are voted on by the children who attend the party. The winners
are announced at the end of the party. The finalists’ posters
are displayed at the zoo for a year.

Metropolitan
Reading Council (MRC) Writing Contest
The Metropolitan Reading Council, the local branch of the Nebraska
State Reading Association, conducts an annual writing contest. The
contest aims to promote writing and celebrate young authors in Omaha
and surrounding areas. The competition is for students in 4th and
5th grade who wish to compete. The MRC judges entries and announces
area winners in late winter/early spring. Information on the MRC can

Modern
Woodmen of America School Speech Contest
The Modern Woodmen of America sponsors the School Speech Contest.
The contest and related materials are provided free of charge. The
goal of the contest is to help students develop lifelong skills associated
with preparing and presenting a 3 – 5 minute speech. The contest
topic changes each year. Aldrich 5th grade students participate. Speeches
are developed in class as part of the 5th grade curriculum. All students
give an oral presentation to their class. Top classroom speakers move
on to the school-wide contest. The top two presenters from the school
compete in the state competition held in April. For more information

National
Geography Bee
The National Geography Bee is a nation wide competition developed
by the National Geographic Society. The program’s goal is to
promote teaching of and encourage student interest in geography. Aldrich
students in 4th and 5th grade participate in the Bee as part of their
classroom activities. All students participate in classroom level
competitions. The winner from each classroom advances to the school
wide competition. The school-level winner completes a written exam
to determine advancement to the state competition. The Aldrich PTA
is excited to sponsor this competition for our students. Learn more

National
Language Arts League
Continental Mathematics League (CML) offers a number of competitions
for elementary schools. All Aldrich students in Grades 2 – 5
participate in the National Language Arts League (NLAL) contest. The
goal of the NLAL is to enhance students’ reading comprehension
and problem solving skills. The contest consists of multiple choice
questions on language arts topics (spelling, vocabulary, comprehension,
grammar, analogies). The top ten individual names and score for each
grade are submitted to the NLAL. The Aldrich students in 2nd, 3rd,
4th and 5th grades obtaining the top score are recognized as the school
champions. This test is given in April and results are announced in
May. The Aldrich PTA sponsors this competition. Additional information

National
Science League
Continental Mathematics League (CML) offers a number of competitions
for elementary schools. All Aldrich students in Grades 2 – 5
participate in the National Science League contest. The goal of the
contest is to increase students’ interest in science. The Contest
consists of multiple choice questions in the areas of life, physical,
earth and general science. The top ten individual names and score
for each grade are submitted to the NLAL. The Aldrich students in
2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades obtaining the top score are recognized
as the school champions. This test is given in April and results are
announced in May. The Aldrich PTA is pleased to sponsor this competition

Presidential
Physical Fitness Award
The Millard Public Schools’ fitness assessment is Fitnessgram
recommended by NASPE standards. An assessment is given to Aldrich
4th and 5th grade students as part of their physical education classes.
In addition, Aldrich students in grades 4-5 participate in the Presidential
Fitness Challenge. Students achieving presidential scores in all five
assessments receive recognition on a fitness plaque that is displayed

Reflections
Reflections is a program sponsored by the National
PTA that encourages children to express their creativity through various
art forms. Aldrich students in kindergarten through 5th grade are
eligible to participate in four categories: literature, visual arts,
photography and musical composition. There are two age categories
at the elementary level. Primary includes K – Grade 2 and Intermediate
includes Grades 3-5. The National PTA announces a new theme for each
year’s competition. The theme is announced in November and the
local competition takes place in January. The Aldrich PTA conducts

WordMaster
Challenge
The
WordMaster Challenge is a national language arts competition based
on word comprehension and logical abilities. The Challenge is for
students in grades 3-5.The contest’s goal is to foster growth
in vocabulary and verbal reasoning skills. Classroom participation
is at the discretion of the classroom teacher. The Challenge consists
of three “meets” per year held in December, February,
and April. WordMasters issues vocabulary lists to participating schools
several weeks before each meet. Students study the vocabulary in the
classroom and independently in preparation for associated analogies
quiz, or meet. The top ten scores per grade are submitted to WordMasters
for the team score. The highest scoring Aldrich students for each
grade level are recognized as the school champions. The WordMaster
