Return to the Spanish Program Menu

We will begin with the basics for all students this first year. Topics will include greetings, introductions, numbers 1-31, classroom directions, calendar, colors, shapes, sizes, family, weather, animals, body parts, foods, and Mexico.

Each year, students will pick up additional vocabulary and skills that will build on previous learning. It will be six years before the program is fully implemented. Program goals for students who have completed all six years of the Spanish program are as follows:
Millard Public Schools
Elementary Spanish Program

By the end of fifth grade students will be able to:

• Understand and follow classroom directions
• Comprehend simple sentences
• Read simple words and sentences
• Form simple sentences (both orally and in written form)
• Understand and use question words: who, what, when, where, why, and how
• Use a bilingual dictionary to look up unknown words
• Recognize numbers 1-1,000
• Utilize the vocabulary necessary to communicate on the following topics: greetings, introductions, polite expressions, feelings, likes and dislikes, calendar, weather, colors, animals, family, food, clothing, school, places, etc.
• Describe cultural traditions, geography, art, and music of Spanish speaking countries

Proficiency Level:
Students will probably still be in the Novice Learner Range. They will be able to understand more than they can say. They will be able to comprehend and produce vocabulary that is related to everyday objects and actions on a limited number of familiar topics. They will rely on contextual clues, objects, visuals and gestures to generate meaning. (From ACTFL Performance Guidelines for K-12 Learner)
