Dear Aldrich Parents,
Welcome to the Aldrich Spanish Program. My name is Kathy deBoer and
I am the Spanish teacher for the new IB world language program here
at Aldrich. I am very excited to be part of the new IB program. You
are probably wondering what to expect from an elementary world language
program.
We will be approaching language learning using the natural method.
When children learn their first language, they do so by listening
to the speech that is used around them. They attempt to duplicate
what they hear to communicate their own needs and ideas. The natural
progression of language acquisition proceeds in this order…listening,
speaking, then reading and writing.
Spanish class will be conducted in Spanish. Students
will not understand every word that they hear. I will use various
methods to help them construct meaning using props, gestures, pictures,
etc. In order to be successful, students will need to be focused,
listening, and watching at all times. I will use lots of repetition
and accept questions in English as necessary for clarification. Our
class will consist of lots of hands on and movement activities, games,
and songs. Spanish class should be a fun but academic experience for
all students.
If for some reason, your child seems to be struggling with, or not
enjoying Spanish, please contact me right away. If some crucial vocabulary
was not mastered for some reason, your child may need a little extra
help to get caught up. I am available before and after school on most
days. I am happy to help those who need some extra practice. It’s
better to catch issues early, so students don’t fall further
behind. By working together, we can assure success for your child.
Our rules for Spanish class:
1. Look
2. Listen
3. Participate appropriately (raise your hand to
speak, keep your hands to yourself, follow teacher directions)
4. Speak Spanish
I have heard wonderful things about Aldrich students and do not anticipate
many behavior issues. If a student is not following our classroom
rules for some reason, I will give a few warnings. If the inappropriate
behavior continues, the child and I will call their parent or guardian
so that we can work together to resolve the problem. Thank you so
much for your support. If you would like to visit our Spanish class,
you are welcome to join us. Be prepared to participate!!!
Sincerely,
“Señora deBoer”
