 What Is a Good Citizen?

With Election Day and Veterans’ Day around the corner, we are reminded continually of the importance of being good citizens.  As adults we understand that we should be informed, give service to our community and country, and we should vote proudly in all elections.  But what can a seven-year-old do to show she is a good citizen?  As we discuss this Pillar of Character Counts, we can think of lots of ways for children to show  good citizenship.

At its core, good citizenship is doing our share, contributing to the community, obeying rules and laws, respecting   authority, and cooperating with others.  When we choose to  recycle, we are showing our respect for the community of our planet..  When we choose to do our chores and follow the rules at home and school, we are being good members of our home and work communities.

When we join together to honor people who serve— such as veterans— we are illustrating strong national citizenship.  Learning the words to the patriotic songs, helping an older neighbor with packages, assisting a young child by tying a shoe or zipping a coat— these are all examples of children being good citizens.

We might take these small actions for granted, but what would our world be like without these daily displays of good citizenship?  Take a minute to recognize how you and your children contribute to the community, and point out to the youngsters the significance of their mindful good citizenship!

HP Grant!

Speaking of good citizenship, special thanks to Mrs. Nancy Feidman for her work in submitting a grant to Hewlitt Packard on behalf of

Cottonwood.  We received a fabulous new desktop computer and flat screen monitor as a result of her efforts.

Mrs. Feidman participated in HP’s "Product for Doers" grant program, whereby employees volunteer at local agencies and schools and then apply for a chance to be awarded a product bundle grant for the agency.  Mrs. Feidman is a Cottonwood volunteer and  chose to   apply in our name!   We are deciding where to put this great tool so it benefits the most people.  (I vote for Mrs. Nelson’s officeJ.)
