Text Box: From Mrs. Nelson — At this week’s PTA meeting I mentioned the kids voting, and several people said they enjoyed having conversations with their children about national issues. I visited many classrooms prior to our voting to talk about the democratic process and promote their interest in voting. To my surprise, even the youngest students were able to say what the main issues were in the campaign, and they had opinions about how decisions should be made.
We had a bulletin board in the main hallway with some information about the candidates, and we discussed how to find more specific news regarding the candidates’ views. I held up some sheets I had printed off from the Time for Kids and Scholastic web sites which described issues (Education, Health Care, the Economy, the Environment and Iraq) and the candidates’ views in “kidspeak.” We also talked about the historic nature of this election— whichever candidate took office. Barack Obama would be our first African-American president, and John McCain would bring with him the first woman to hold office in the Executive Branch. Their votes, although not counted at a national level, would make them part of history.
The younger students weren’t aware that we had once denied the vote to women. They couldn’t guess what group of people weren’t allowed to vote. When I hinted that I was a part of that group, one little boy said, “They wouldn’t let principals vote?!” When I told them that I was 18 in 1971 and was among the first group that age permitted to vote, one child asked, “How old are you, anyway?” I told him that baseball and I were first cousins.
After a huge voter turnout at Cottonwood Monday, the students voted 45% for John McCain, and 55% for Barack Obama. Wednesday morning as we practiced for Friday’s assembly, we announced the winner and sang “God Bless America” together. The children have spoken. — NN
