Setting Goals
Text Box: From Mrs. Nelson — Sometimes you might wonder why school is called off for bad weather when it just doesn’t seem so bad. Don’t forget that there are a lot of inexperienced drivers out there in the form of high school students, and many make their way to school very early in the morning, before the side streets and sometimes main roads are cleared. In Millard we also have many children who walk to school. When there is ice, that can be treacherous!
We had planned our first hot-chocolate morning for Tuesday, but instead the gathering occurred Thursday. We had plenty of children come in and pay 25 cents to get a cup of cocoa and hear a story as we raise money for those in need. We are so proud of the job they did bringing in cans for the Food Bank, and now we see warm clothes piling up in the lobby for the Open Door Mission and Lydia House! It’s hard for a child to get perspective on the world and to feel part of the solution to big problems. Participating in events like these helps. Perhaps this weekend you could help your child clean out a coat closet or toy box and let him/her make a donation.
One of the 40 Developmental Assets that helps children grow to be successful adults is Asset # 9: Service to Others. Did you know that employers viewing resumes regard community service as one of the most important indicators of good character? It’s ironic that when we do good deeds, they come back to help us as well. During my regular Friday morning Cougar Paw discussions with kids, we talk about how being a caring citizen can be contagious, and how it helps build the kind of world we want to live in. Even the littlest Cougar understands that! —NN

· We will have an     assembly on Friday the 21st at 2:45 to sing songs and celebrate the closing of our Season of Giving.  Parents are welcome!
