Text Box: From Mrs. Nelson — Happy New Year! This is the time of year when we make our resolutions— lose weight, get more organized, exercise regularly, read more, et al.— and we generally go like gangbusters for about three weeks before sliding back into old habits. As a result of Millard’s action plan to help each student develop personal learning plans, we are also teaching children how to formulate and keep resolutions.
Students start by making a S.M.A.R.T. goal. The acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-oriented and Time-bound. It isn’t enough to say, “I want to get a 1 in math.” Students must look at where they are and where they want to be. Then they make a plan that has steps which work toward the end goal. One step might be to set aside time every night after dinner to go over the day’s lesson in math and make sure it is understood. Success of this technique would be measured by better grades on quizzes and tests. They might find that they learn more when they participate in class, and so that could be incorporated into the plan.
The difference between a wish and a goal is in the planning and in the checking of progress along the way as one works toward ultimate success. In kindergarten the class sets a goal together. Later in their academic careers, students take the responsibility of setting their own personal learning goals. High schoolers become experts at self-reflection and goal setting.
All this is to say that if you are having trouble sticking to that resolution you made a couple of weeks ago, you might want to sit down with a second grader and have him share the secret to his success!
