From Mrs. Nelson— This week we celebrated with our Cougar Paws on Thursday morning.  The following students received a Character Counts pencil and certificate along with the special recognition:  Haley Diggs— Respect,       Responsibility, Caring;  Payton Christensen— Trustworthiness; Stephanie    Bellus— Caring;  Ben Paustian — Responsibility, Caring, Citizenship; Andy Lee— Caring; Vyctorya Myers— Respect, Caring.   I noticed the theme of      caring this week, and that makes us especially proud because it’s something we are conscientious about here.  We want all of our students and parents to “feel the love.” 

             One of the ways we show caring is the way we greet students in the morning.  Everyone has a place to be as students arrive at school.  Mrs. Zielke, Mr. Sealer and another teacher are out front with the children from 8:25-8:35.  Our specialists and paraprofessionals are “stationed” around the building about every 20-30 feet, and teachers are in their classrooms waiting to greet the little Cougars as they start their day.  We know it’s important to take a good look at the kids and greet as many as we can by name.  Sometimes we catch those that had a rough morning or missed breakfast in the rush.  I often get the news of a new baby or a lost tooth as I stand just inside the front doors to say good morning.  The kids know the rule:  If someone says good morning to you, you have to say it back!  I’ve been known to chase a grumpy second grader down the hall and even tickle a little until I get a greeting! 

             Seeing those faces every morning is one of the best parts of my day. There’s so much promise in their smiles.  Seeing “Caring” on a Cougar Paw nomination tells me that our sign in the front hall is correct:  “Nice Matters.”
