From Mrs. Nelson —  When I was growing up, one of my favorite television programs was “Leave It to Beaver.”  During Spring Break I was delighted to find it on television, and I as I watched, I realized even more clearly how much times have changed.

In this episode, Beaver’s teacher gives him a note to give his parents.  It is in a sealed envelope, and Beaver has no idea what it said.  The story line is     simple:  Beaver doesn’t give the letter to his parents because even though he     hasn’t done anything, he is sure that he is going to be expelled.  Teachers never write to parents unless there is trouble!  All sorts of mishaps occur because of his dishonesty, and his dishonesty is the result of his mistrust of teachers.  In the end, Beaver’s parents learn about the note, as does the teacher, and Beaver receives the consequence of having to write the same sentence on the board 50 times.  It turns out that the note was asking for parental permission for him to be in a play at school.  In the final scene, Beaver and his second-grade teacher talk about helping each other through the year and working as a team.

How times have changed!  Parents and teachers are in contact so much more these days, and we rarely expect children to carry home “secret notes” to their parents.  We telephone, email or talk outside after school fairly often.  Teachers and students have closer relationships than in the past.  They aren’t friends, necessarily, but they aren’t just business partners, either.  There is a feeling of trust, and we work at letting students know that we care about them— and not just their schoolwork.

Sometimes I do long for those days when we wore high heels and called each other by our surnames, but when you are in the kid business, being able to get down and play with them just might be more important!                  —NN
