From Mrs. Nelson  —    This Sunday we honor those ultimately important people in our society and lives, mothers.  Mothers have changed a lot over the years— at least on the outside.  I can remember my mother coming to school in a pretty dress with high heels and stockings to serve cupcakes and punch to a group of first graders!  It was very formal and subdued, moms walking up and down the rows with trays from which we took a goodie when it was offered.  Of course we took a napkin from the other hand, too.

My mother was an Army Wife, that rare breed of woman who just nodded when her husband said things like I am going to Korea for a year— without you and the kids.  She would pack the house, clear the quarters, help find new housing, and then reverse the process, oftentimes alone.  In the evening during those trying days, she would apologize if dinner was “just sandwiches.”

She was always home when school let out, and there was usually a very nice smell in the air, pot roast or chicken with vegetables (always two, for some reason).  There was cake or cookies when we had friends over.  I later found out that was part of a plan to make sure the friends came to our house— and it worked.  Generally about 20 minutes into a visit with new friends, she would enter with a tray of something, their eyes would light up, and I knew I’d not be seeing their toys or hearing their records anytime soon.

When I started driving and dating, she would invariably be sitting in the living room of our split-level house with the lights out when I came home.        Although I was rarely late, if it was past curfew I would carefully tiptoe up the stairs and generally made it right to the top before she said, “Good evening,” sounding a lot like a female Alfred Hitchcock.                       (cont. page 3)
