Assessment Schedule

Text Box: From Mrs. Nelson — Part of being in a world-class district in the 21st century is student assessment, even in elementary school. Assessment scores help us to see where we are being successful in teaching the curriculum to the children, and in what areas we need to improve. Along with various subject areas being examined, there are also different kinds of assessments.
Kindergarten and first grade were recently assessed to determine where they are in their understanding of literacy skills— letters and sounds. This information will help us to know where to start in teaching these little ones, and when they are assessed again at the end of the year, it will tell us how far they have come.
Our Essential Learner Outcome (ELO) assessments are given to first through fifth grades here at Cottonwood. Every grade takes the Analytical Writing Assessment in November. First grade takes a language arts ELO, while second through fifth are assessed in reading and math. Third grade takes a speaking assessment, and fifth is also assessed in listening, science and social studies. Fourth takes an additional State Writing Assessment.
Third and fourth graders also take the TerraNova assessment and the Test of Cognitive Skills (TCS/2). This national standardized assessment measures achievement and aptitude and tells us where our students are when compared to students across the nation. Your child’s teacher will remind you before assessments are given. Students are prepared a couple of ways. First, we make sure they have been taught what will be assessed. Second, we familiarize students with the format of the tests so that they feel as comfortable as possible in the testing environment. You can help at home by letting
