Text Box: Volume 6 Issue 6 Text Box: September 15-19, 2008 Cottonwood Text Box: Inside: Text Box: Safety Patrol Cougar Paws Student Council Text Box: From Mrs. Nelson — On the 24th of September, we will be visited by some people from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission (formally NCC—North Central Accreditation Association). This organization works with school districts across the country to promote continuous school improvement. The entire Millard District is participating in a Quality Assurance Review visit during the week of the 22nd. The purpose of our visitation is for the team to review and substantiate a document called the Standards Assessment Report for Schools, which the teachers and School Improvement Team worked on last spring. This report looks at seven standards and asks probing questions about how we teach and engage kids here at Cottonwood. On the 24th, the team will interview a team of staff members, a team of students, and a team of parents. They will look at our assessment data over time and other relevant data, and then they will write a report with recommendations for the school and District. I am very excited about this visit! We have been NCA accredited for years, and their “inspection” always results in lots of compliments and some suggestions for improvement. It’s a chance for us to show off all the good things we do and to find out how we can improve. One of our practices here is the use of Professional Learning Community teams— grade level teachers and others— that meet bi-monthly to look at student achievement and how particular instructional methods impact student learning. A big positive shift in education has been the use of data and collaboration with other professionals to improve teaching for the purpose of increased student learning.
