Text Box: From Mrs. Nelson — We have been busy getting to know all the new faces around Cottonwood. Miss Nowak, our counselor, made a bulletin board that highlights all the students new to Cottonwood this year (not counting the kindergartners). There are 27 faces showcased in the north hallway outside the Media Center, each with a paragraph or two about their lives. I thought you might want to get to know our new grown-up Cougars as well.
New to our first grade this year is Mrs. Alexis Freshman. The adults call her Lexi. When I met Mrs. Freshman, her name was Miss Soriano! She was married just last spring in Hawaii. She and her husband Rob met in eighth grade at Kiewit Middle School. They have a yellow Labrador retriever named Chloe. Before Lexi attended Kiewit, she was a student at Cottonwood for first grade and then went to Abbott Elementary. Fifth grade teacher Mrs. Peterson was in her class. What a small world!
After high school at Millard North, Mrs. Freshman attended the College of St. Mary and had three majors: elementary education, early childhood education, and special education. She met Ms. Gough there, and now they teach next door to each other! Lexi taught special education at Ackerman Elementary for two years. Once she team-taught with a first grade teacher, and it was then that she realized she wanted a group of first graders of her very own. We are so lucky that she chose us to help her fulfill that dream.
For fun, Mrs. Freshman likes to scrapbook, do yoga and practice Pilates. She is also working on a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and reading. Welcome back, Lexi— we are so glad you’re here!
