Morton Site Plan

MISSION

J. Sterling Morton Elementary, a child centered school community, will
guarantee the opportunity for each student to learn the academic and life skills necessary for ongoing personal success and responsible citizenship by expanding educational experiences in a safe and caring environment.

OBJECTIVES

Students will meet or exceed District and state standards and overall performance on District and state assessments will improve annually.

Each student will participate in setting and will achieve challenging educational goals tailored to his or her abilities, interests and aspirations.

The percentage of students performing at high levels on measures of national educational excellence will increase annually.

Students will make a successful transition from one level of education to the next.

STRATEGIES

We will develop and implement plans to expand student support programs.

We will develop and implement plans to restructure re-teaching.

We will develop and implement plans to utilize staff in more innovative ways.

We will develop and implement plans to address the changing demographics of our community.

Action Plans

*Action Plans will be implemented over a two-three year time period.

STRATEGY:We will develop and implement plans to expand student support programs.

SPECIFIC RESULT: Develop and implement an enrichment day program that will meet the needs of our students academically and socially.

  • Develop a timeline for implementation.
  • Provide training/staff development for staff and parents in multiple intelligences.
  • Develop and implement an enrichment day program using resources within our school and community. (1 per semester)
  • Conduct interest surveys- parents, staff, community, students
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the program and change when appropriate.-staff, parents, students

 

STRATEGY:We will develop and implement plans to expand student support programs.

SPECIFIC RESULT: Develop and implement a homework help club to meet the academic needs of our students.

  • Make a timeline for implementation.
  • Develop a schedule for teacher led homework club.
  • -meet three mornings (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) and two afternoons (Tuesday, Thursday)
  • -K-2 teacher
  • -3-5 teacher
  • Identify and train staff members and volunteers for the Homework Help Club.
  • Identify students through teacher recommendations and/or parent request.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the program and refine as needed.

 

STRATEGY: We will develop and implement plans to restructure re-teaching.

SPECIFIC RESULT: Develop a written parent communication plan for re-teaching.

  • Provide formal communication to all parents about the re-teaching program
  • At the beginning of the year
  • Upon entering Morton
  • After each re-teaching session
  • Evaluate communication effectiveness.

 

STRATEGY: We will develop and implement plans to restructure re-teaching.

SPECIFIC RESULT: Create a position to re-utilize re-teaching dollars to serve all qualified students.

  • Re-evaluate re-teaching schedule
  • Provide staff who utilize a consistent plan to meet each child.
  • Determine the number of students who qualify for re-teaching. (Students at risk of not meeting their educational goals.)
  • Determine the time available to effectively re-teach.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the re-teaching program.

SPECIFIC RESULT: Collaborative planning between classroom teachers and specialists to meet the educational needs of all students.

  • Develop a meeting schedule for grade level teams and specialists.
  • Set time for meetings during Wednesday planning time.
  • Prepare written agenda.
  • Develop a checklist of upcoming curriculum to aid the specialists in working with all students.

SPECIFIC RESULT: Implement additional High Ability Learner support to improve academic and social/emotional performance of HAL students.

  • Identify and train individual to administer additional HAL curriculum for verified K-5 students.
  • Work with teachers on HAL strategies.
  • Expand the HAL curriculum.
  • Evaluate student progress.
  • Provide peer learning opportunities for HAL students.
  • Establish communication between classroom teachers and the HAL coordinator.
  • Establish communication/activities with parents of HAL students.
  • Attend HAL in-services/conferences.
  • Establish communication/activities with HAL parents.
  • Plan and develop diverse opportunities for HAL students.
  • Develop a schedule within the school day.
  • Order materials.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the additional HAL support.

Specific Result: Implement a plan for staff development on the effects of changing demographics.

  • Provide resources for staff development.( ie-books, research, speakers,videos, in-services)
  • Analyze the information.
  • Identify individual student needs.
  • Develop a plan to assist students and coordinate available resources provided by the community, district and school.
  • Evaluate student progress.

Strategy:We will develop and implement plans to address the changing demographics of our community.

Specific Results: Develop communication strategies with families to access availability of school and community resources.

  • Create a pamphlet of community, district and school resources for families.
  • Include staff and optional family e-mail addresses in the buzz book.
  • Add community resources to buzz book.
  • Create a notebook that has specific community resources for staff to utilize. Update yearly.
  • Evaluate and update information each year.

Strategy: We will develop and implement plans to address the changing demographics of our community.

Specific Results: Implement a program to welcome new families to Morton.

  • Create a welcome packet withcurrent information about groups and organizations available at Morton. (ie: Cub Scouts-night they meet, how to sign up, contact names)
  • Survey and develop a list of new family needs.
  • Coordinate a sponsor family for each new students and their family.
  • Survey new families to see if their needs were met.
  • Evaluate process yearly.
