WELCOME
CHILDREN
WHO READ SUCCEED!
- The
R.E.A.D. Program is a Millard Public Schools program designed to meet
the
needs of children not yet reading on grade level.
- Reading
strategies are taught and practiced to assist children with
decoding
(reading the words) and comprehension.
- The
following strategies are taught so children can begin to use them
automatically when they come to unknown words. These strategies are
tools that
children learn to carry in their brain to use whenever
they encounter a tricky word(s).
- Use picture
clues when available.
-
Use the sounds and familiar phonic patterns.
- Skip the unfamiliar word and read on to the end of the sentence to
gain more information from the context. Then go back to
reread.
- Think about what makes sense in the story. The words you read must "sound right."
- Find "chunks" in the unfamiliar word i.e. smaller words you know or
word endings like "-ing" or "-ed."
HAPPY
READING!
