All
students in the fourth and fifth grades may participate in the Newbery Club.
The Newbery prize is the highest honor awarded to an author of children's books.
Each year the best book and several honor books are chosen by a panel of librarians,
teachers, and publishers. To qualify for Newbery Club students must follow these
guidelines:
1. Students must read 10 Newbery award winning books before May 8 and discuss
each book with Mrs. Lewis at a conference.
2. Students may count up to 4 Newbery books that have been read to them by their
teacher.
3. All books must be completed during this school year.
4. Students who have completed the books and conferences by May 8 will receive
a Newbery Club t-shirt, have their name engraved on the Newbery plaque in the
Information Center, and be invited to an ice cream party in the information
center at the end of the year.
5. Newbery books are on a special shelf in the library. The book may have been
the award winner or honor book for any year.
6. Book conferences can be arranged with Mrs. Lewis on Monday or Thursday,
from 11:20-11:40 or 3:00-3:15. You may conference on one or two books at a time.
Sign up for an appointment in the Information Center and write it in your
assignment notebook.
Stop
by the library and try one! They're top notch!
